On Friday, Jan. 29 the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill sent out a notification that a cluster of COVID-19 had been identified at Avery Residence Hall. A cluster is defined by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as five or more COVID-19 cases in close proximity to each other.
This is the second cluster that the school has discovered since move-in started on Jan. 13. The first cluster, reported on Jan. 13, was associated with students who had stayed on campus over winter break. Last semester, UNC reported a total of 12 clusters. In their return to campus for the spring semester, the school implemented a regular asymptomatic testing program for all students living on or near campus. According to UNC’s COVID-19 Dashboard, there have been 489 positive cases since Jan. 1, 391 from students and 98 from employees. Of the 201 positive cases reported since students moved back to campus, 150 have been from asymptomatic testing, proving that the new testing program has been effective in catching cases before they spread. ● The Recommended Content Widget will appear here on the published site.
