Two more clusters of COVID-19 have been reported by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The first, at Morrison residence hall, was reported on Tuesday, Feb. 2. The second, reported yesterday, was at Connor residence hall. A cluster is defined by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services as five or more COVID-19 cases in close proximity to each other. This is now the fourth cluster that UNC has reported in 2021 and the third in the past seven days, suggesting that the school is heading in an unfavorable direction in terms of case counts. According to their COVID-19 Dashboard, UNC reported 145 positive cases from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. The previous week saw 134 positive cases, and the week before that had 118 positive cases. During the fall semester, UNC had reported four clusters of COVID-19 before they asked students to cancel their on-campus housing contracts. By the end of 2020, the school had reported a total of 12 clusters. This semester however, chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz suggested that there will be no “off-ramp” for on-campus students. In January, he told the Daily Tar Heel that the university has “no intentions” of sending students home. Instead, the school is relying on a large-scale asymptomatic testing program and an increased number of beds reserved for students in isolation and quarantine. The school has reported 600 cumulative positive cases since Jan. 1, 494 from students and 106 from employees. The Recommended Content Widget will appear here on the published site.
